  • klassisches Teams Meeting ohne Lobby
  • kein “dunkeles Loch” für SprecherInnen
  • keine Aufnahme

Recap of SharePoint Saturday Cologne 2020

After the great success in 2019, we planned SharePoint Saturday Cologne in 2020 as well. The series of Microsoft 365 Community Conferences must not be allowed to break off, so it already started in 2010 with the Office 365 Conference, founded by Raphael Köllner and in the meantime it was called Office 365 Business Day and then from 2019 SharePoint Saturday Cologne.

Since we always try to give access to as many members of the Microsoft 365 Community Germany (www.office365hero.de) as possible, we had been looking for new premises in Cologne and ended up back in the Microsoft Office in Cologne. Although this could only be obtained at high costs, it was still within the bounds of what was financially feasible.

Then the pandemic struck and after lengthy discussions and hygiene concepts, the organization team realized that a SharePoint Saturday in Cologne as a purely offline event was not feasible. So we talked to the speakers, looked for a new date in September and also the wish of the majority shifted the date into September and to a Friday. This is meant for the families of all, who should at least get some rest at the weekend in this difficult time.

So the SPSCGN now took place on September 04, 2020 and this time online for the first time. We discussed in the orgateam how to move an event, which lives from exchange and communication, into the virtual world. Under no circumstances did we want to stir up fears, insecurity and were in favor of free speech and a high potential of communication.

The result was a classic Microsoft Teams Meeting:

– classic team meeting without lobby – no “dark hole” for speakers – no recording – preferably with video – possible much discussion – virtual bar for exchange

This concept was confirmed in the feedback of the participants. There were over 50 positive and only 1 negative feedback that they wanted recorded sessions. All understood that open communication and open discussion without a visor is the right way to turn an offline into an online conference. Again, for 10 years now, it was a must to be there.

Everybody participates in an online conference and nobody is alone.

The word everyone can create and experience and makes a conference in our community only as good as you bring yourself into it. That’s why there is no recording and no shyness, no one holds a question or an opinion against you.

We are happy about 500 registrations for SharePoint Saturday Cologne 2020, we would have got a maximum of 180 offline in our conference. An online conference thus offered the chance for more people to participate without travel costs and effort.

With more than 20 speakers, a lot of MVPs and also speakers who were there for the first time, there was a nice atmosphere. Often you had to decide between the three tracks, we know this and therefore we had not created four tracks, but three longer ones.

Thanks also for the feedback, that we should send all access data after each session by email to all of you and tell the speakers that you should use a headset.

All in all we were over 200 participants throughout and even in the final score with 35 people it is a great thing.

The future is called hybrid

The future is called hybrid also in the conference world. We are planning to have a hybrid conference in 2021 with 60 people on site and up to 2000 in Microsoft Teams meetings. We have tried out the technology and a standing hygiene and Microsoft Room Meeting System for the day.

We are looking forward to seeing you in May 2021!
